Concussion Management Guidlines

Washakie County School District #1 Concussion Management and Return to Play Guidelines (RTP)

Worland High School

  1. Mandatory pre-season baseline Impact test for all student-athletes in volleyball, swimming, football, basketball, wrestling, soccer, track, and spirit

Any student who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion (such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion, or balance problems) shall be removed immediately from the contest or practice and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health care professional.

  1. Mandatory physician visit for the student (Day 1 after diagnosed concussion)
  2. 48 hours minimum of rest and no exertion activities
    1. Coach will check in with student and parents/guardian to monitor symptoms
  3. Student will retake the Impact test after 48 hours of no concussion symptoms
    1. This may be different for each individual timeline that needs to retake the Impact test
  4. Student may begin light restricted activities after 48 hours of no concussion symptoms and having similar pre and post-concussion Impact test results (Day 3 after diagnosed concussion)
    1. Light jogging, stationary bike/catching/hitting (vb)/shooting (basketball), etc. – absolutely no full contact or conditioning activities
    2. Coach monitors student for symptoms
    3. Student will self-report if symptoms return
  5. Student may begin restricted practice and sport specific drills (Day 4 after diagnosed concussion)
    1. Absolutely no hitting or any type of “contact” drills or game situation practice
    2. Coach monitors student for symptoms
    3. Student will self-report if symptoms return
  6. Student needs written clearance from an appropriate health care professional before returning to normal practice (full contact and game situation) while still being closely monitored for symptoms by the coach, student, parent/guardian for 48 hours (Day 5 and 6 after diagnosed concussion)
    1. If at any point symptoms (i.e. headache, nausea, light-headedness, dizziness, easily fatigued, memory problems, etc.) the student goes back to the initial step of an appointment with an appropriate health care professional and restarts steps in concussion RTP protocol
  7. Student may participate fully in activity (practice/game) (Day 7 after diagnosed concussion) and successfully meeting each step of the above guidelines

The following professionals will serve as WCSD #1 RTP Agents: NP, PA, Family Physician, Neurologist, or other related medical professional.
